Will Mike Wallace Holdout be a Serious Problem for Pittsburgh Steelers?
After a disappointing end to last season, it has become apparent that not only could the Pittsburgh Steelers very well be in for some tough challenges next season, but they might be the third best team in the AFC North division. With Hines Ward retiring and the Steelers dealing with constant injury problems to Pro Bowlers Ben Roethlisberger and Troy Polamalu, this team is beginning to look flawed and potentially no longer a perennial Super Bowl title contender in the AFC Conference.
Whether or not the Steelers era of dominance in the division and conference are over remains to be seen, but right now the biggest concern in Pittsburgh seems to be the contract situation with up-and-coming wide receiver Mike Wallace. With Wallace threatening to holdout because no new contract has been offered to the young wideout, the Steelers might be in serious trouble downfield next season and for the foreseeable future.
There’s no question at this point in time that Mike Wallace is the best player at wide receiver and has a bright future in the NFL. With lightening quick spread and Big Ben’s favorite target, the passing game thrives and is firing on all cylinders when Wallace is on his game. Not only does he keep the defense guessing with his ability to burst downfield as fast as anyone in the league, but he makes the play-action a viable weapon for Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin.
If the Steelers can’t resolve these issues as soon as possible, Pittsburgh will be in trouble moving forward and might start the season without their best offensive weapon on the field. We have some good prices on Pittsburgh Steelers Tickets for the Baltimore Ravens games.
Steelers’ Mike Wallace Seriously Considering Holdout for New Contract
Last season the Pittsburgh Steelers were humbled with the Baltimore Ravens emerging as the best team in AFC North and the Cincinnati Bengals threatening to become a serious force to be reckoned with in the years to come. With the competition in the AFC North only improving, the Steelers reign as perennial division champions might be coming to an end.
As if the sudden retirement of Hines Ward was a big enough blow to the receiving corps in Pittsburgh, the Steelers might also have to play without arguably their best wide receiver in Mike Wallace. With Wallace looking for a new deal and rightfully so, the Steelers are in danger of having the same problem as the Philadelphia Eagles did with up-and-comer DeSean Jackson.
After failing to come to agreement with Jackson in Philly, the rising star played awful and seemed to fall off the map of elite wideouts in the NFL. The same might be said with Wallace in Pittsburgh if the Steelers can’t figure out a way to re-sign Michael Vick’s favorite target downfield in the near future.
With talks of a new deal hitting a snag, Mike Wallace is seriously considering holding out. These holdouts for big-name players usually never end well as the team is already hesitating on inking a new contract. With that being, this contract situation with Wallace may very well continue for quite some time with wide receiver attending training camp being a big question mark. Can the Pittsburgh Steelers Reclaim the AFC North Crown in 2012?
Of all the division rivalries in the NFL, the most competitive and most heated is when the Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers of the AFC North go head-to-head in the regular season and playoffs. These two teams have no love lost for one another and seemingly want to kill each other once on the gridiron.
Last season was interesting to say the least within the AFC North division as there was a shift in power. The Steelers have been the dominant team ever since the emergence of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. With Big Ben under center in Pittsburgh, the Steelers have won two Super Bowls and the division title on a seemingly annual basis. That changed last year with the Ravens taking control of the division with relative ease.
Along with the Ravens becoming a legitimate Super Bowl title contender, the Cincinnati Bengals came out of nowhere to emerge as a force to be reckoned with. Not only did the Bengals blindside the league, but they made it all the way to the playoffs with rookies Andy Dalton and A.J. Green leading the way.
In the 2012 NFL season, the competition within the AFC North will be as competitive as ever with the Bengals, Ravens, and the Steelers all battling it out for the division title once again. Pittsburgh will be a contender within the division as usual, but whether or not they can reclaim in the crown in the AFC North remains to be seen.
The divisional race between the three AFC heavyweights may very well come down to the wire!
Will the Pittsburgh Steelers Trade Wide Receiver Mike Wallace?
As one of the few teams in the NFL that are a force to be reckoned with every single year, the Pittsburgh Steelers haven’t missed a beat with head coach Mike Tomlin calling the shots from the sidelines and superstar quarterback Ben Roethlisberger running the show under center.
With a dominant defense and a formidable offense, the Steelers have been the team to beat in the AFC North. Last season was the exception though with the emergence of the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens have been a great team for quite some time, but have struggled against the Steelers throughout the past half-decade. That changed last year with the Ravens sweeping the season series and easily winning the division title.
Despite failing to contend for the AFC North division title last season, the Steelers did see a star emerge in the form of wide receiver Mike Wallace. With Hines Ward taking a back seat (ultimately retiring), Wallace had a chance to shine and did just that as he became the number one option in the passing game for Big Ben.
Even though Wallace emerged as one of the fastest wideouts in the league and a favorite target of Roethlisberger, the Steelers have yet to re-sign the up-and-comer. Reportedly, the Steelers wanted to sign Wallace to a one-year tender, but that wasn’t acceptable for the lightening quick wide receiver and now a trade might be on the horizon.
It appears that being traded might be Wallace’s best chance to land a big deal. There is no telling how serious either side is about making this move, but something must happen fast with training camp around the corner.
